Wine Equipment

Winemaking needs less hardware than brewing but is far less forgiving about measurement. A hydrometer and somewhere clean to ferment will get you most of the way; the rest is about handling the wine gently once it is made.

Wine Equipment

What we stock

The equipment that actually matters

A hydrometer is the one genuinely essential tool. It tells you the potential alcohol before fermentation and whether the wine has finished afterwards — neither of which you can judge by eye or by watching an airlock.

A refractometer is worth adding if you work with fresh fruit, since it reads sugar from two drops rather than a full sample. Its readings become unreliable once alcohol is present, so it complements a hydrometer rather than replacing it.

Everything else is about handling the wine gently. A tapped fermenter saves siphoning, a draining tree holds sanitised bottles ready to fill, and a decent barrel tap makes the difference between a clean transfer and an oxidised one.

Adjusting a must and not sure where to start?

Bring us a pH reading and a Brix or gravity figure. Acid, tannin and nutrient additions are far easier to get right before fermentation than after.
